Sisterhood | Lake Stevens Children’s Photographer

June 7, 2012
PinExt Sisterhood | Lake Stevens Childrens Photographer

Here are just a few images from a shoot I got to shoot with some cute Lake Stevens kiddos today. As soon as I saw these two sweet girls, I knew I wanted to take a few shots that really captured what its like to have a sister. I have many friends who have sisters…and its a special, often loving relationship that is like nothing else. My favorite is seeing a mother of the bride that has a sister, or sisters that come around her and are her helping hand at a wedding. Its like they can read each other’s minds. I find it fascinating and wonderful.

These images where taken at our new Studio in Lake Stevens, Washington. We are so excited about all this property has to offer and this is just a tiny little taste of it! :)

I’ve had so much fun getting to know Jenny Keller of Jenny Cookies lately! We have a blast coming up with some pretty fun ideas…texting back and forth like crazy and we have some pretty fun plans in store for the future. If you have ever thought about having a spectacular and different dessert table, cupcakes or custom cookies for favors at your wedding, Jenny is your gal! She has a billion creative ideas, and the presentation that is going to knock the socks off your guests….and the taste buds too. Yummo!! I’ve had the privilege of partaking more than a few of her delectable creations and not only are they so visually beautiful, they are delish too!!
A few days ago, we did a spontaneous Easter Dessert Table Shoot…(read…Jenny had this amazing Ruffle Cake on her mind, woke up, started baking and didn’t stop till nightfall! Then she called me…and I came over and shot it while our kiddos played with snails and ate bunny cupcakes to their hearts content!).  If this is work…..I love it!

Here’s more about Jenny Keller and what makes her happy, what inspires her and how she got her start.
What makes you happy?
My family makes me happy.  I have an amazing husband who is my #1 fan, who treats me like the best prize he’s ever won, and doesn’t let a day pass without telling me how great I look or how lucky he is.   We’ve been blessed with two healthy, beautiful children that are not only smart, creative, and hilarious, but are filled with love for others.  I peek in on them after they’ve fallen asleep at night, and I can’t help but just hold their little hands and say “Thank You Jesus for these sweet babies.”
What inspires you?
I am constantly being inspired.  I can spot old barn while driving down the road and think, hmm…that would make a great backdrop for a dessert table, or an old suitcase at an estate sale and start thinking vintage airplane party.  I might find a beautiful lavendar glass cake plate and suddenly a whole lavendar baby shower theme pops in my head.  It’s almost a sickness.  My mind is always thinking of excuses and reasons and uses for things I see in everyday life.  And my garage holds the proof.
What do you love about weddings?
I love the details of a wedding.  Things that are unique to the couple.  The more the better.  I feel the more detailed the wedding, the more time, work and energy the couple is putting into their special day.  It’s your wedding day, one of the most important days of your life, make it special!

Why did you decide to start baking?
I’ve always been a cookie eater.  Before I had kids my refrigerator was filled with 10 different kinds of break and bake cookies on any given day.  When dinner time rolled around I’d just open the fridge and pick from chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, or sugar cookies!  As time went on I got more and more into it and started baking for my kids.  That led to people asking if they could place orders, if I’d teach a class, if I’d fly to California to create dessert tables for a party book……it’s snowballed from there.
Do you have any favorite blogs that you like to read and get ideas from?
I like people’s blogs that have great photos but can also write.  If it makes me laugh, I’m bookmarking it.  There are some funny people out there!  For ideas and inspiration I love a great party blog.  There are so many blogs nowadays that feature other people’s weddings and parties.  I love seeing the different elements, design, and creativity of others in this industry.  To name a few:  Amy Atlas Events, Style Me Pretty, Hostess with the Mostess, Kara’s Party Ideas, and of course the pioneer woman of all things creative, Martha Stewart.
Do you come up with the ideas for the dessert tables or does the bride? How does that work?

Every bride is different.  Some brides want their hand in every single detail of their dessert table, others just want me to create it.  I meet with the bride, pick their brain a little, get an overall feel for the couple’s personality, budget, and overall wedding theme, and then go from there.

How do you charge?
Prices range depending on how little or how much the client wants me to do.  They could order anything from simply just the cookie favors, to cupcakes, cookies, and a cake, to desigining the entire table.  Full wedding dessert tables start at $1000.  This includes design, desserts, cake stand and platters rental, backdrop, and set-up.

What if the bride wants something really cheezy or something that just doesn’t really work?
Luckily I haven’t had anyone want anything super cheesy.  But, if that problem were to come up, I’d probably suggest options to make it LESS cheesy.  I think if a bride has done their research and seen my work, they will already have an idea of what I do….and what I don’t do.  There is always a way around cheesy.  For example, I had a Sesame Street party for my 2 year old last August.  To most, a Sesame Street party would mean running to Party City, buying every scrap of Sesame Street party themed loot they sell, plopping it on the table and calling it a Sesame Street party.  That’s cheesy.  Instead, I pulled the colors, the letters and numbers, the street sign, and obvious elements of the show, and created a party that had not one Sesame Street character plate, napkin, or goodie bag but everyone knew they were at a Sesame Street party.
What are your ideal clients like?
My ideal clients are people who are open to suggestion.  I would so much rather get a general sense of what the client wants and be free to custom create something versus a client showing me a photo of someone else’s work and saying “I want that”.
What kinds of questions do you ask the bride and groom or clients in order to get an idea of how to design their desserts?
Wedding/Event/Party colors, theme, and time of year are big factors in designing a client’s dessert table.  Others include the number of guests attending, how much food they will be serving, and ultimately, their budget.
Is there anything you wished brides knew about desserts that they might not know?
How time consuming cakes and desserts can be.  Those little edible icing flowers you see on wedding cakes…those take forever.  Rolling out fondant to cover a cake, not only time consuming, but physically hard!  Making cake pops that looks like an owls, budget 3 hours to create 30.  People have no idea how many hours are put into creating a custom cake and other desserts!
If you would like an amazing dessert table at your wedding….email Jenny at jennyraekeller@gmail.com or visit her website JennyCookies.com Ps. You will love her! :)

I’m one of those people that didn’t grow up around kids. I never really babysat much, I was the youngest in my family, and I didn’t have any cousins that were younger…..But there is something about well behaved kids that is so refreshing. I love to see their little personalities shine through. These kid are sweet, kind and well behaved…my favorite kind!:) I love that one of them is quiet and analytical, one is opinionated and knows what she wants, and one is a peace maker.  Its fun to watch, even in my own kids, that the personalities they have as babies and toddlers, seem to be their  same personality as they grow up. It just amazes me.

Seattle Children's Photographer | Kaylee Eylander | Balloons and my Baby!

March 3, 2010
PinExt Seattle Children's Photographer | Kaylee Eylander | Balloons and my Baby!

I grew up with a camera in my hand. I can remember a field trip to the Woodland Park Zoo in 3rd grade….Some of the snapshots from that day had my finger over the lens, most were blurry…but they evoke the memories of that day. I can remember that it was cold, but fun….and we laughed in the back of the bus all the way there and home.

When I turned 16, I received a Minolta SLR camera…and I never looked back. I loved the blur in the back ground, and the space it created in images. I was hooked. Then that morphed into Yearbook Staff, then lots of images from across the country, then when I had my dear Estelle, I knew I wanted to make a living by taking pictures…now she is 6 and I just can’t believe it. She was my favorite…and most convenient model during those first years of business. Thank you Estelle for being such a great model!

Yesterday I bribed her with a bunch of balloons and some hot chocolate, and we went out to shoot….again…one my favorite children to photograph…..Estelle balloons 1 Seattle Children's Photographer | Kaylee Eylander | Balloons and my Baby!
